The Golden Ruby Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Ruby') is a small compact deciduous shrub that belongs to the Berberidaceae family. It is a hybrid plant that was developed in Japan by crossing Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Crimson Pygmy' with Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea'. This plant is known for its attractive foliage, which is a vibrant reddish-orange color in the spring and then deepening to darker red accented with golden edges as they mature. As winter nears, the foliage makes another colorful splash, turning bright orange, almost brick-red before resting for the winter. The leaves are small, oval-shaped, and have a slightly serrated edge. Rarely produces seedlings. This barberry is safe to plant anywhere. The Golden Ruby Barberry is a compact shrub that typically grows to a height and width of 2 to 3 feet when mature. It has a dense, bushy growth habit, and its thorny stems make it a good plant for creating natural barriers or hedges. This shrub is low-maintenance and can grow in a variety of soil types, but it prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. However, it can stand some shade as well as drought and heat.
